Heart Disease is the number one cause of untimely deaths in the world. Bad lifestyle choices is the main cause for cardiac disease. Fatty food, lack of exercise, stress, smoking and alcohol are bad for heart health. Genetics also plays an important role in heart disease. Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is the most common amongst the heart diseases. In this the arteries supplying blood to the heart get clogged which reduces the supply of blood to the heart. This results in cardiac arrest and can cause sudden death.
Other heart diseases include defect in one of the heart valves, irregular heart beat, hole in the heart, increase in the heart size, reduced blood pumping etc.
Tests which are done to evaluate the health of heart are ECG, Treadmill Test, 2D Echocardiography, Lipid Profile, Blood Sugar, Chest X-Ray etc. Patients having higher values for Lipid Profile or higher values for Blood Sugar are more likely to have heart disease. Treadmill Test looks at the health of the heart under stress. Many patients can have normal heart rythem at rest but when they do some kind of exercise like walking or climbing stairs then the heart trouble may start. TMT evaluates the health of the heart when the heart rate is increased from 70-80 to 150-160 beats per minute. 2D Echocardiography is an excellent non invasive test of the heart which measures the flow of blood in the coronary arteries and also the pumping capacity of the heart called Ejection Fraction.
If the results of these tests indicate the presence of any kind of heart disease, then further more advanced tests like CT Angiography, Thallium Scan, Stress Echocardiography etc are carried out.
The cost of a basic heart checkup should be in the range of Rs. 4500 - 6000. The cost of the package is always lower than the combined cost of the tests taken individually. The cost of advanced tests like CT Angiography is Rs. 11000 - 15000, Thallium / Muga Scan is Rs. 5500 - 11000, Cathlab Angiography is Rs. 12,000 - 15,000. Most of the tests in heart checkup involve no radiation and therefore can be carried out annually without any harm to the health of the patient. Obese patients, smokers and those having a family history of heart disease should be particularly careful about their heart health.
Most of the tests for heart are done by Cardiologists. These are doctors who have done MBBS, MD (Medicine) and DM (Cardiology). However some of the tests like Echocardiography can also be done by doctors who hold a diploma in Cardiology. Dr Sanjeev Chaudhary in Gurgaon and Dr Sandeep Parekh at Arogya Heart Centre and Shalby Hospital Mohali in Punjab are the best cardiologist or heart specialist for regular heart check up in India.
